World Bank Commends Ethiopia’s Pharmaceutical Sector as Key to Better Healthcare and Job Growth
The World Bank has praised Ethiopia’s efforts to expand its local pharmaceutical manufacturing, recognizing it as a key driver of healthcare access, job creation, and inclusive economic growth. Program Leader Sherin Varkey emphasized that domestic production will reduce reliance on imports and support health equity, especially as two million youth enter the labor force annually. The initiative is backed by favorable reforms, such as the Kilinto Industrial Park, which is designed to attract pharmaceutical investors. The World Bank and IFC continue to provide financing, technical support, and policy guidance to help Ethiopia build a resilient and self-sufficient health sector.
