WHO Post-Outbreak Review in Ethiopia Strengthens Future Readiness After Marburg Response

Following the successful containment of Ethiopia’s first Marburg Virus Disease outbreak, the World Health Organization conducted a Joint Operations Review in Addis Ababa to assess response performance and strengthen preparedness for future health emergencies. The review brought together experts across global, regional, and national levels to identify operational successes, address gaps in infection prevention, sanitation, and surveillance systems, and refine coordination strategies. These findings highlighted the ongoing need for reliable protective equipment, consistent safety protocols, and stronger supply chain readiness to better protect healthcare workers and communities during high-risk outbreaks. With lessons now being shared across the region, the review marks a significant step toward more resilient health systems and more effective responses to emerging infectious diseases.
