Ethiopia Launches UN-Backed Initiative to Tackle Severe Child Malnutrition

Ethiopia has launched the Joint UN Initiative for the Prevention of Child Wasting (JUNIPr), in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, WFP, and the UK’s FCDO, to combat severe malnutrition in children under five. The four-day Co-Creation Workshop held in Adama marked the beginning of a five year multisectoral plan to design and scale locally adapted, evidence-based solutions. The initiative emphasizes a shift from emergency response to prevention, integrating efforts across health, food, WASH, and social protection systems. Ethiopia’s pilot is expected to serve as a global model for tackling child wasting in food insecure regions.
