Ethiopia Launches R21 Malaria Vaccine to Protect Children and Strengthen National Health System

Ethiopia has launched the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, becoming the 23rd African country to include it in routine immunization—an important step toward reducing child mortality and malaria-related illness. The rollout targets 91,000 children in 58 high burden districts across nine regions, where they will receive four doses between 6 and 15 months of age. Backed by WHO, Gavi, UNICEF, and other global partners, the initiative complements existing malaria control measures like treated nets, spraying, and early treatment. Health officials say the vaccine marks a major milestone in protecting children under five and advancing Ethiopia’s long-term goal of malaria elimination.
