Ethiopia Highlights Milestones in Maternal, Child, and Primary Healthcare in Global Stage

Ethiopia’s Vice President of the Prosperity Party, Adem Farah, highlighted the country’s major health care gains while addressing the 2nd Africa Caribbean Health Ministers’ Meeting in Addis Ababa. He pointed to a sharp decline in maternal mortality—from 871 to 195 per 100,000 live births since 2000—and reductions in neonatal deaths, showing the impact of sustained investment. Ethiopia has built 17,000 community health posts, 4,000 health centers, and over 450 primary hospitals, extending care even to remote areas. With 80% of the population covered by community-based health insurance and social health insurance on the way, Ethiopia is moving closer to universal health coverage. Adem emphasized that a strong, people-centered primary health care system is the foundation of this progress.
