Ethiopia Establishes National Foundation for Stroke Awareness and Treatment

The Ethiopian Stroke Foundation (ESF), founded by Dr. Wondewossen Gebreamanuel, has launched a nationwide initiative to raise awareness, improve treatment, and train health workers to combat stroke—the second leading cause of death and disability in Ethiopia. At its launch in Addis Ababa, officials including Mayor Adanech Abebe emphasized the urgent need for public education, prevention, and specialized care. The foundation’s clinical arm, the Axon Stroke and Spine Centre, has already treated over 100 patients, highlighting both the rising demand and the shortage of facilities. Plans include building a dedicated stroke center, expanding training programs, and strengthening research to reduce the growing burden of stroke across the country.
