Integrated Nutrition Care Expands Access for Families in Ethiopia
A new study led by Addis Ababa University, in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health and the United Nations World Food Programme, found that treatment for moderate acute malnutrition can be effectively included in Ethiopia’s Health Extension Program. Conducted from 2023 to 2025 across five districts—Girawa, Zala, Aleta Chuko, Mille, and Adadle—the study showed that nutrition services became available at nearly all health posts in the study areas, helping children and families access care closer to home. The approach also improved coordination among local authorities, strengthened supply management, increased community awareness, and supported better use of treatment guidelines. Ethiopia has also reduced wasting from 10 percent in 2016 to 5 percent in 2026, showing continued progress in improving child and maternal nutrition.
