Patient Safety Initiatives Strengthen Healthcare Systems in Ethiopia
Efforts to enhance patient safety are advancing in Ethiopia, highlighted by a national review meeting of the Global Patient Safety Collaborative held in Adama with participation from the Ministry of Health, 24 health facilities, and key partners. The initiative has led to concrete progress, including the development of national patient safety guidelines, the launch of an incident reporting and learning system, and the integration of safety protocols into health professional education. Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ethiopian Healthcare Federation, the programme also introduced e learning platforms and a National Patient Safety Network to improve coordination and capacity across facilities. These developments reflect Ethiopia’s growing commitment to safer, more resilient healthcare systems through strengthened standards, training, and collaboration.
