Africa Unites to Tackle ‘Silent Epidemic’ of Fungal Diseases
Africa’s first-ever summit on fungal diseases has set a strong foundation for improving public health across the continent. Led by Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Global Action for Fungal Infections, stakeholders committed to expanding diagnostics, treatment access, and disease surveillance. These infections, which heavily contribute to pulmonary diseases and complicate conditions like tuberculosis and asthma, remain a major but often overlooked health burden. The collaboration also prioritizes research, local capacity building, and patient-centered solutions to address gaps in care. With stronger coordination and growing awareness, the initiative marks a significant step toward reducing preventable deaths and improving health outcomes across Africa.
