Health Sector Charities Strengthened as Ethiopia Tackles Legal Barriers
The Ministry of Health Ethiopia has launched a new initiative to address legal gaps that hinder the operations of charitable medical organizations, including the Heart to Heart Children’s Aid Foundation. Senior Advisor Dr. Aschalew Worku said the government is accelerating healthcare modernization and backing local capacity to perform complex procedures such as heart surgeries treatments that previously required costly travel abroad. Speaking at a foundation event, leaders announced a new Goodwill Ambassador and an upcoming U.S.-based fundraising campaign to expand support. Despite being newly established, the foundation has already funded 113 free pediatric heart surgeries at a cost of more than 120 million birr, signaling growing domestic capability in specialized care.
