Ethiopia Launches High-Level Dialogues to Strengthen Health Workforce for Universal Coverage

World Health Organization supported Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education in launching High-Level Multisectoral Dialogues to advance the country’s Human Resources for Health Strategic Plan 2024–2030. Backed by funding from the United Kingdom’s Department of Health and Social Care, the initiative brings together leaders from health, education, and finance sectors to align investments and address workforce quality, distribution, and retention gaps. Ethiopia has expanded training institutions, strengthened licensure systems, and formalized community health workers through the Health Extension Program, but further reforms are needed to meet Universal Health Coverage goals. The dialogue series aims to translate policy into concrete financing commitments under the Health Workforce Investment Compact, reinforcing a coordinated national push toward a more resilient and equitable health system.
