Ethiopia Digitizes Public Health Systems with World Health Organization Support
The World Health Organization is helping Ethiopia modernize its public health emergency system by digitizing surveillance, data management, and response operations. Working with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, the World Health Organization has deployed three interoperable platforms — ePHEM, DHIS2, and EIOS — to streamline emergency alerts, real-time data analysis, and event-based surveillance across the country. So far, over 3,300 health staff have been trained nationwide, with DHIS2 now covering 72% of districts and ePHEM fully operational at the national level and used during outbreaks like Mpox. Together, these systems are creating an integrated, real-time health information ecosystem that improves early warning, decision-making, and national health security.
