Wheels of Change: How Bicycles Are Powering Community Healthcare in Rural Kenya
In Kenya’s Busia County, community health promoters (CHPs) are transforming healthcare delivery with the help of donated bicycles. Previously limited to visiting just a handful of households daily, CHPs like Simon Itaere and Linet Opili can now reach up to 15 homes a day, respond faster to emergencies, and carry medical supplies more easily. Since the program’s rollout, referral times for children under five have improved by 50%, and treated cases have risen by 40%. With over 600 CHPs already equipped and more planned by 2026, bicycles are proving a simple yet powerful tool to expand healthcare access and build community trust.
